Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members
Last week we celebrated Book Week at Campbell Town District High School. Students engaged in a range of activities to celebrate the joy of reading. On Thursday we held our costume parade and celebration of reading. The usual array of witches, wizards, superheroes, Disney characters and Where’s Wally’s made for a colourful and exciting day that was enjoyed by all. A great example of engagement with literature were the Reader’s Theatre plays practiced and performed with enthusiasm by our Year 4-6 students. We are delighted that our Year 7-9 students are entering a team in the ‘Write a Book in a Day’ competition supporting the Kids Cancer Project. This is a great opportunity for students to develop skills in writing, illustrating and teamwork.
I am pleased to inform the school community that Mr Andrew Martin has joined the teaching team this term. Mr Martin brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in Humanities, English, Outdoor Education and Physical Education. He joins our secondary teaching staff teaching Year 7 and 8 English, HASS and Physical Education. Mr Martin has also joined the team for Secondary Sport. We also welcome Ms Hana Redererova who is a UTAS Master of Teaching student. Ms Redererova also joins the secondary English/HASS team working with Mrs Pullen and Mr Hodge. We are delighted that Ms Redererova will be offering some short courses in European language and culture. Ms Redererova will be with us for the remainder of Term 3.
Developing student voice is another DECYP priority. Mrs Lydon has led the development of student voice assemblies in the senior school. These assemblies are operating in a similar manner to a staff meeting. Students are identifying and prioritising issues that are important to them. We have already been able to action a Year 10 camp and the development of a senior school common room as a result of the feedback that we have received from students.
Our staff are continuing to implement the system reading priority across the school. Staff are undertaking regular professional learning and embedding evidence based programs across the school. We are delighted and encouraged by the growth and progress achieved by our students.
I am pleased to inform the school community that performance evening this year will be a Christmas concert in the latter part of Term 4. We will provide details in the coming weeks.
Kind regards
Mike
KINDERGARTEN MEASUREMENT LEARNING
This term Kindergarten students have been learning about measurement. We have explored the concept of longer and shorter using string, sequenced objects by their height and used informal objects to measure our feet.

On Tuesday 8th August 2023 4/5 Coombe and 5/6 Curtin left school on the bus at 9:00am. Soon after that we arrived at the Deloraine train park to have a snack and play.
When we got to Camp Clayton, we sat down and ate while listening to the Camp Clayton supervisor for what we should and should not do while staying at camp.
Later, we sorted into our groups and cabins and unpacked our essentials. After staying and talking in our cabins for a while we put on our hats and sunscreen and went beach combing. We found some very interesting treasures!
We split off into our groups and did a whole range of activities such as rock-climbing, ziplining, trampolines, archery, gaga ball and mini golf.
We had dinner and had a fire shortly after that then we settled down for bed. The next day we had breakfast and rotated around the same activities as the previous day so we all got a turn.
At lunch time, the 4/5's left Camp Clayton while the 6’s did lots of fun things like the Anvers Chocolate Factory and went out for lunch. The year 6's stayed another night, had breakfast then headed back to Campbell Town.
We had such a great time at camp!

Hazel’s Top 5 Camp Experiences
- When we got on the bus everyone was chatting with the people next to them it was so exciting especially when we arrived at Camp Clayton everyone was jumping up and down in their seats as the chatting became so much louder.
- When we were finding out what cabins we were in I was restless, I felt excitement and I couldn’t wait to walk into the cabin I was in.
- During archery I was getting a little frustrated because it was so hard but after about 2 minutes, I began to think it was funny how the arrow would stick up from the ground when I missed the board.
- The rock-climbing wall was my most favourite part of the activities, I loved trying to get past the overhang. I got close every time but couldn’t grab the big green rock to get past the hang.
- When we left, I couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family about the amazing trip we had had.
5 Things I enjoyed at Camp Clayton by Rivah
I Enjoyed:
- Sleeping in my cabin.
- Flying over the water on the Zipline.
- Having a chat before bed with my roomies.
- Bouncing high on the trampolines.
- Going to the beachside and collecting things.

At the end of last term, the year 7-10 My Kitchen Rules class participated in their end of term burger challenge. Each team designed a burger to create and serve to the three guests judges. Students were lucky enough to have Mr Flanagan, as well as two other principals judge their efforts. Students were judged on their presentation and of course, taste of their food! The scores were incredibly close and the winning team won by less than 1 point! All students should be so proud of their efforts with this task and all three principals commented on how excellent the class had planned and presented their work. Congratulations to our challenge winners Ava and Aiden… VERY closely followed by Elvie and Zoe!

All students who have assisted with preparing the wethers for the AWI Wether Challenge need to be thanked and congratulated. Their hard work is paying off. A big thank you to Henry & Ajay, from 11/12 VET Ag who have built yards, fences, handled the wethers, fed them and been amazing support to others learning to lead the sheep. 5/6 Curtin ….. all of them, have been absolute stars displaying resilience and perseverance as they have learnt to lead the sheep, and the sheep have learnt to lead. They have taken them on some interesting journeys throughout the school and have shown true teamwork as they assist each other. A special thank you to the 5/6 students who has stepped up and taken responsibility for feeding the wethers of a weekend.
Shane, a new student in Year 11 also deserves a special mention. Shane has taken on feeding both grain & hay to the wethers, and delivering hay to the paddock, each day he is at school. A big thank you to Shane for his help.
Our wethers are leading well and learning to walk on different surfaces, and with people around them doing silly things. We are starting to teach them how to stand for showing. Georgie Wallace, from Trefusis visited on Wednesday and gave us lots of hints on preparing for the big day at the end of September. Thanks, Georgie, for all your help, including lending us halters and leads.
Congratulations to our team of students who will show the sheep on the 27th September at the Campbell Town Showgrounds. The team from 5/6 includes: Dane, Florence, Makalya and Will. The 7-10 Ag team is Zoe, Hanna and Ava. A big thank you to all the 5/6’s who wrote a letter to me, saying why they wanted to be in the team, or why they didn’t want to be. They were very persuasive, and it was a tough decision choosing the team. Those not in the team will still be assisting in the preparation of the wethers.

TASMANIAN AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR VISIT
On Thursday the 24th of August, Year 4 to 6 students had a visit from Dr Frances Donaldson, Keith Parker and John Kamara. They came to speak to us about the awards they had just won as Tasmanian Australian of the year (John), Senior Tasmanian Australian of the year (Dr Frances) and Local Hero of the year (Keith).
The day before their arrival, we did some research about them and wrote some questions we would like to ask them. Luckily they were able to answer most of them!
They spoke about their backgrounds and how they had come to be nominated and then awarded these prestigious awards.
We really enjoyed listening to them.

Book Club Issue 6 will be sent home with students this week. Orders must be placed by 9.00am on Thursday 14th September and can be placed online or if paying by cash through the school office.
STUDENT WELLBEING AND ENGAGEMENT SURVEY
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Grades 4 - 12
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Grades 4–12 at Campbell Town District High School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: Monday 11th September - Friday 22nd September 2023
Who: All students in Grades 4 - 12
What do I need to do: You and your child do not need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Grade 4 – 12 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Kristyn Green via the school office.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
